Disintegration to Integration
Sunday, January 11, 2009
Have you ever said, "I just can't 'get' that pose….?"
Explore the art of asana 'deconstruction' and 'reconstruction',
enabling you to practice or teach poses with more understanding
(Vidya), finesse (Sthiram), and power (Shakti) and less effort (Sukham).
We'll look at a few favorites from each type of asana and will also
take suggestions from the group, time permitting. Geared to all
levels. (Great for teachers).
Required
reading: Anatomy of Hatha Yoga or Anatomy of Movement.

Reaching for Kaivalya: Yoga Philosophy and Practice
March TBD
A primary goal of Yoga is to achieve Kaivalya, a state
of liberation from the mundane and union with the divine. There
is a comprehensive world view and philosophy behind all that we
currently call "Yoga." Yoga practice is as much about
transforming the mind as it is about transforming the body. One's
path to freedom is incomplete without the examination of Yoga's
philosophical foundations and techniques for bringing these forth
into your world. In this workshop, we will explore and understand
some of the most important tenets of Yoga through an examination
of its literature and scripture. We will also embody some of these
principles through a balanced hatha yoga practice.
Required
reading: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, any translation,
first 2 chapters; The Bhagavad Gita, any translation; and
Tantra and Classical Yoga article by Linda Johnsen (article
provided to participants)
Yoga
for Better Sleep
at All
that Matters, Wakefield RI
Sunday, January 25, 10am-4pm
Moodiness, impaired decision making, and poor memory, cognition
and spatial orientation (not to mention just feeling tired) are
all symptoms of sleep deprivation. Insomnia and its related afflictions
are at epidemic levels in this country. More than just an annoyance,
sleep deprivation can have serious health effects: fibromyalgia,
chronic colds, allergies, IBS and other auto-immune conditions have
all been attributed to disordered sleep. The good news is yoga can
help reverse the sleeplessness cycle. Learn the physiology and science
of sleep, the rest/stress cycle and how lifestyle choices can aid
or hinder how well we rest. Explore specific yogic techniques and
be guided through a hatha yoga practice that will encourage relaxation
and a deeper slumber. After a break for lunch, investigate specialized
nurturing meditative practices that will unwind the mind and unlock
your "sleep center." A guided Yoga Nidra, in which you'll
experience profound rest, will conclude the day and renew your intention
to support your best Self through sleep.
The
Architecture of Energy
at Old Common Yoga Auburn MA
January
31,
2009, 1-4pm, $35
Bandhas - most of us are somewhat familiar with the ‘big
three’ (mula, uddiyana, jalandhara) bandhas. But what are
they, really, and how do they relate to your breath (prana),
consciousness (Buddhi) and well being , not to mention your
asana? In this workshop, be guided on a joyful journey through
these energetic gateways, delving deeply into their design, function
and life enhancing qualities. You’ll also explore some of the lesser
known bandhas, designing a foundational structure of the body and
mind and mapping a new landscape for your yoga practice.
To register, email oldcommonyoga@charter.net.
Yoga
and Prana
at the Arlington
Center, Arlington MA
Saturday, February 7, 2009
Our very existence is animated through the accumulation
and utilization of primal energy, called Prana. Although the word
Prana is mentioned frequently in the yoga world, it is rarely examined
in depth. For instance, there are five categories of physical prana,
characterized by their movement and direction, which we'll explore
through asana, discussion and observation. We'll delve into an exploration
of Prana's real power and potential for expanding Creativity and
Consciousness.
